C-Source Renewables focuses on providing renewable sugars as a raw material for fermentation industries derived from industrial and agro-residual waste streams. CSR currently operates a small R&D research facility with scaling facilities for bioprocess up to 100 L with which they can design and execute model-based bioprocesses for specialty and bulk chemicals. In WoodVALOR, CSR will develop bioprocess for LA and microbial oils using glucose syrups derived from the cellulosic fraction of DW.

Celignis is a spin-off company from the University of Limerick formed to commercialize rapid biomass analysis. Celignis is increasingly developing its bespoke bioprocessing (enzymatic hydrolysis, extraction, pretreatment, fermentation, etc.) solutions and is undertaking targeted international research programs focused on the development of new IP related to valorisation of biomass and process residues. In WoodVALOR, Celignis is using its fractionation and modification expertise to fractionate and valorise the hemicellulose and lignin fractions of contaminated wood to specific products that are required by P&Cs industry.

PuriFire Energy is a sustainable fuel technology innovation company, experienced in innovative design and development of hydrothermal treatment technology. They are committed to scaling their portfolio of unique technologies while minimizing environmental impact, driving positive change, and creating value for their stakeholders. Within WoodVALOR, Purifire will scale-up their HTL technology to produce phenolic monomers

PILI Bio is a company developing and producing sustainable high-performance dyestuffs from glucose syrups. PILI works at Toulouse White Biotechnology, a top-notch research facility hosting a team of scientists in metabolic engineering, fermentation and downstream process development, as well as analytical chemistry. In WoodVALOR, PILI will produce dyes and pigments from glucose syrups for use in paint formulations, with a focus on achieving the same performance as their conventional products.

Hempel Group is a global coatings manufacturer headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. The company operates in over 80 countries, serving a diverse clientele with a focus on quality, reliability, and technological advancement. In WoodVALOR, Hempel will develop polymerisations of the monomers provided by the other partners and use the polymers within industrial formulations for application testing of paints and coatings.

Sika is a global leader in specialty chemicals and building materials, headquartered in Baar, Switzerland. Founded in 1910, Sika develops and supplies innovative solutions for construction, automotive, and industrial applications. The company’s product portfolio includes concrete admixtures, sealants, adhesives, and waterproofing systems. With a presence in over 100 countries, Sika serves a broad range of industries, focusing on quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction. Their role within WoodVALOR is to validate chemicals arising from the project in a variety of representative formulations to confirm suitability for use.

KU Leuven is currently by far the largest university in Belgium in terms of research funding and expenditure and is a charter member of LERU. Within KUL, the Centre for Membrane Separations, Adsorption, Catalysis and Spectroscopy for Sustainable Solutions (cMACS) forms an interdisciplinary and international team that pioneers research in catalysis, energy, spectroscopy and separations. Research at the De Vos group (cMACS) centrally focuses on microporous materials and how they interact with organic molecules, via adsorption or catalytic transformation. Current catalysis topics include C-H activating reactions (e.g. for pharmaceuticals preparation), selective functionalization or splitting of (post-consumer, heteroatom-containing) polymeric feedstocks. Within WoodVALOR, KUL will perform the conversion of LA to acrylate esters.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) is a research organization operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland. LUKE’s task is to promote competitive business based on the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, as well as wellbeing and the vitality of the rural areas. In 2023, LUKE’s researchers published more than 600 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Within WoodVALOR, LUKE will lead tasks on the decontamination of waste wood, production of biochar via pyrolysis, and use of biochar as a soil amendment to recover soil fertility in areas affected by mining operations.

Karlstad University is a modern Swedish university founded in 1999. Serving
approximately 16,000 students, it is recognized for strong research programs in service research, environmental science, and teacher education. WoodVALOR will be integrated into Karlstad University’s Pro2BE (Processes and Products for a Sustainable Bioeconomy) research environment, which specializes in developing new packaging materials, creating products from residual streams, and advancing paper material dewatering and drying technologies. The university’s Environmental and Energy Systems team brings extensive expertise in analysing industrial woody biomass processing through comprehensive system analysis methods. Their methodological toolkit encompasses material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and advanced statistical modelling for industrial process data interpretation. Within WoodVALOR, KAU will lead tasks on sustainability assessments—conducting TEA, LCA, and S-LCA studies that will ultimately inform the development of a decision support system for deadwood valorisation
